Our Coast
BBC2 Our Coast see’s Adrian Chiles, Mehreen Baig and a team of experts explore four spectacular coastlines linked by the Irish Sea, and meet the extraordinary people who call them home.
We joined the Our Coast production team starting in Liverpool and the Merseyside coastline. Danielle George visits the Birkenhead Hydraulic Tower, a local titan of Victorian industry which was bombed in the Blitz and is now about to become the centrepiece of an industrial renaissance. Meanwhile, Adrian Chiles goes on board the magnificent Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, the largest ocean crossing liner in the world. Mehreen heads off to board a slightly smaller craft, run by one of the oldest RNLI lifeboat stations anywhere in the country. She gets the chance to join the crew of the Hoylake Hovercraft as they embark on a full rescue drill.
In the following episode Adrian and Mehreen visit Head to North Wales and Anglesey via the Menai Strait. Travelling in breath taking style on the UK’s fastest Rib as they navigate their way through the Menai Strait’s. A stretch of water so tempestuous that Lord Nelson said “if you can sail here, you can sail anywhere”. Here Mehreen tells the story of the Menai Strait’s magnificent bridges. With record levels of traffic crossing from mainland Wales plans are in place to add a third bridge, with an extraordinary design that’s literally ‘gigantic’.
