Crab Ascend!

Artist Lydia Wong

Artist Lydia Wong

Aerialworx have worked with a number of high profile artists including Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, so when the opportunity arose to work with the amazing Lydia Wong, we were super excited.

Lydia approached us with this concept and as far as we’re aware this is a world first where two heavy lift drones were used to simultaneously lift two large kite shaped sculptures, weighing 9kg and 6kg respectively. Two weeks of careful planning meant that everything went like clockwork and we were relatively lucky with the weather and captured amazing shots of these wonderful art sculptures flying.

This short film centres around two crab-shaped kites flown in a sculptural performance against an open sky.

It is the second of a trilogy of sculptural performances which were developed by artist Lydia Wong and ask how identity and sense of a place can be preserved in the face of increasing censorship and autocracy. These themes are explored through the phenology of a crab’s moulting cycle and Chinese mythologies about afterlife and reincarnation.

Aerialworx worked closely with Lydia, carefully planning and executing a combined two heavy lift drone project, where we flew two heavy lift rigs simultaneously, lifting these 9kg and 6kg crab-shaped art sculptures and at the same time flying a third DJI Inspire drone for filming the main piece which you can view above.
